Campaigns

Torbay Mencap are involved in several projects at present and these include direct fundraising, raising awareness, campaigning, and providing grants to local members for sustainable projects

Our main fundraising project is:

Respite Hotel

Respite Hotel – Mencap Torbay and a local community interest company called Turning Heads are currently fundraising and planning to develop a community-based respite hotel. This hotel will provide respite and holiday opportunities for people with disabilities and their families, offer employment opportunities and also serve as a hub to other specialised services in Torbay.

Torbay Mencap are actively involved in developing a changing place in Torquay and are campaigning for one to be built.

People with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably. These needs are met by Changing Places toilets.

We also raise awareness for Bay wide projects and initiatives. We have just opened a grant making fund to any member from Mencap. The grant fund is:

  1. Four annual grants of £250 to help any of our members with a community project or initiative that they are involved in.
  2. Of these grants, two will be available to anyone under 18 and two for over 18’s.
  3. If you are interested in applying then please download the attached form below, read the guidance, and email it to chair@torbaymencap.co.uk

Torbay Mencap also raising awareness and projects information and guidance for local and national initiatives. These include:

Hospital Passport – Going into hospital is a worrying time for any of us. It can be even harder for someone who has a learning disability. If you’re looking after an adult or child with a learning disability, please complete a hospital passport in preparation – it could make such a difference:
Some people have life threatening conditions and are able to tell a Doctor or Paramedic in the event of an emergency. Individuals with learning difficulties can’t always do this. Torbay Mencap have developed a 999 Emergency Admissions Form, to be used in conjunction with the Hospital Passport, so that any emergency intervention has the best chance of saving someone’s life rather than putting it further at risk.
